Girls Basketball Preview 2005-2006

By: Austin Dechaume

Coach Stephenson is the head coach of the girls’ Varsity basketball team, and Coach Butts will be in charge of the J.V. team. It is believed losing seniors means losing leadership but the gap can be filled with hardworking players. The team did lose some players from the previous year but they are coming back strong with seniors; Kendal Harper, Cristina Lara, Whitney Hartley, Brittney Boetch, Paula Vercher, and Jessica Cobb. The practices started on October 19th and will be held everyday until 4:30. The first scrimmage is scheduled for November 4th against Ferris.

The Coaches are very fired up about the upcoming season. Last year, the girls’ Varsity team was  tied with Mildred for 3rd place but lost the tie-breaker game and didn't advance to the playoffs.  The team may have not gotten as far as they had wished in the playoffs, but the girls hope to make it even further this year. The team is working hard on shooting and defense to help better prepare for the upcoming games.  The Coaches hope for more wins and for the team to be more focused.

Boys Basketball Preview 2005-2006

 By: Rebekah Wynn

The boys Basketball season is here and we are all ready for it. Last season was really great, with an appearance in the playoffs. This year the team hopes to further their success by becoming number one in district and advancing further in the post season. Last year the “Twin Towers”, Seniors Adam Sims and Joe Hernandez, played down low to help the team push through to the playoffs. Some believe that the team might come up short down low but Coach Chester feels that the younger posts are very capable but just need some game experience. All guards are returning to the team so this should solidify the backcourt.

With the goal of another playoff appearance this season the team is preparing themselves in all ways possible. Some players participated in a summer and fall league that Coach Chester believes will give the players experience. However, in this league he was not able to coach the players, so he thinks some sloppy habits may have been developed, but any bad habits will be cured now that after-school practice is underway. This year boys’ athletics is during 5th period, and most players intending to play are practicing during this period. “The athletic period being in the middle of the day has been a big help in the sense that it will be like having two practices a day,” Coach Chester said. This enables Coach Chester to focus on defense, offense, and shooting at different times and be more effective.

In all, Coach Chester expects a great team, a great year and to continue into the playoffs and make it a tradition. Last year fans got really excited during the post season, and the players would really enjoy the same enthusiasm this season. The first game is not until November 21 due to the possibility of the football playoffs. We are all looking forward to a great season!
